I find that Sumner is listed at age 8 in 1880 census as a Trowbridge,
stepson of Robert F. Hancock but when Sumner marries to
Ella Isbell in 1896 his marriage record has him listed as Sumner
Cottingham. I find no evidence that Melissa ever married
Mr Trowbridge in Fulton County. I only find one male Trowbridge in
Fulton County with the name LaMont and his family lives
next door to Isbell family. The problem being that his birth year is
1862 and Melissa is 1857. With Sumner born abt 1872 that would only
make this Lamont 10-11 years old when Sumner was born. Where did
you find the father's name as Mont??? I looked
at nearly every Trowbridge male within reasonable age to be with a 14
year old and just do not find to many choices. I guess
the father could have been an Adult with a 14 year old girl, but I do
not find any with the name "Mont". There is an Alfred E. b. 1854
and a Newton E. b. 1852 that could have fahter Sumner. I have found
them in several censuses with middle intitial of "E" which
I suppose could have been Edmont or Elmont which have been shortened
to Mont as a nickname???
