LOUCKS CEMETERY:

I believe there is an error in the list for the Loucks Cemetery burials I
obtained from the Historical Society some time ago. It shows a daughter
Susanna Loucks, dau of Wm & Susanna Loucks, died age 4 yrs, 3 mo, 10 days.

The family had not previously ever heard of this daughter, but that's
possible, so we added her. However, when I visited the Loucks Cemetery last
week, I noticed there is a memorial stone for Wm Loucks with his wife's
Susannah' date of birth & death, and his 2nd wife Fannie's date of birth.
(She apparently was not buried here, although that was the plan, it seems
when this stone was placed.). Wm died in 1909 & this stone has his date of
birth & death. That means this large marble stone was placed after Williams
death in 1909.

There are foot stones on either side of this stone, marked "Mother" &
"Father". Near the one marked "Mother" is a stone for Susannah which
contains the notation died aged 44 years, 3 m. 10 days. (which indeed is the
age at which the wife of Wm. Loucks "Susannah" Campbell Loucks died. I
believe this must be the stone that was read & placed on the cemetery list
as "dau of wm & susannah" , since there is no other stone here for a dau
named Susannah seen. It would be highly unlikely that both wife Susannah &
daughter Susanna died at the same number of months, & days, with just 40
years between them & that the dau stone simply disappeared while the
mothers' stone did not, so I believe there probably was/is only one stone &
that it belongs to the wife, & was misread at the time it was placed on the
list.

I'm back to thinking there is not a dau named Susannah as the list
indicates, but the wife named Susannah has a separate stone because she died
in 1870 and this probably was the only stone placed for her at this time.
In 1909 when Wm died, a stone noting both his wives on it was placed, so it
appears Susannah has 2 stones, but since one has Wm's name & date of death
on it in 1909, for almost 40 years, she just had the one stone. I believe
it was misread as "4 yrs. 3 m. 10 d" when it actually says quite clearly 44
yrs, 3 m 10 days" and in addition it has the following poem on the stone
indicating it is a mother not a daughter's stone.

"Farewell companion, and children dear
Shed not for me a single tear
All has been done, that could be done,
The sands of life with me are run.

Sweet is the sleep our Mother takes
Till in Christ Jesus, she awakes
Then will her happy soul rejoice
To hear her blessed Saviors voice."
