Thanks all for your comments on my recent request for comments on the list.
I'm flattered by the kind comments directed towards me, though I still
believe the success or failure of a list is determined by it's members, not
it's administrator.
Generally speaking, there seems to be no need to make any changes at this
point. If there aren't any uprisings during the year, I'll survey again in
January 2001 to see if feelings have changed.
One topic prompted the most comment, and it came down to a solid 50-50
split: the practice of sharing all of one's names being researched with
fellow members of the list. Plenty of you love the idea, but an equal
number abhor the practice. Personally I vote against it, though the topic
is not addressed in the list guidelines.
One good reason for the success of the list is that it stays on topic:
Gallia County. Hence, every email from the list is potentially interesting
to you as a Gallia researcher. Messages not related to Gallia families
would reduce the value to everyone.
Don't forget that there are many hundreds of mailing lists focused on your
families and counties. And don't be shy about exchanging your other
interests with those you communicate privately to.
Thanks for the comments, and keep up the good work.
