We were over at the fire until about 5:20-10:30 last evening and went
back this morning to take pictures. We didn't think to take camera to
take pictures when things were burning. Six stores look to be totally
destroyed, the Lupton Building which housed three stores and has the
date of 1894 and Lupton Building into the stone. Haskins-Tanner
building and the two building on the upriver side from it. The only
thing left of the Haskins Tanner building is the top of the front
wall. At least the top two floors of the Lupton building are totally
destoryed and the same with the other two buildings. At about 10 am
they were still putting water on it, pumping it from the river because
of a main water line break which left the entire city without water.
We are lucky that we had the river to pump from because they lost all
water pressure about 11:00 last evening and without the water pumped
from the river and the help of pumper trucks from other area's, one as
far as Milton WV, we could have lost more than the six stores.

Gallipolis has lost many old buildings to fire over the past years and
I think this is such a sad thing for our town. Someone said to me
today sometimes you have to lose history to make history. These
building will probably not be able to be saved and besides how can you
replace that much history.
