For all of those who wrote me privately, thank you for your kind
messages. It is absolutely devastating.
We had just left to go downtown about 5:20 for a family dinner...we saw
the smoke on Second Ave. and went around to Third and saw one of the
owners of Haskins Tanner. At that time it was a lot of smoke and only
our fire dept. was on hand. After dinner, we found ourselves cordoned
in but were able to get out. My husband and nephew kept going to check
thru-out dinner.
We then spent the rest of the evening along with most of the town, I
think, watching in awe. Two firewalls were scaled. There was tar roof
on one bldg. which didn't help. And the fire trucks kept arriving which
was fantastic...I personally saw Jackson Co., Vinton Co., Mason Co.,
Meigs Co. and Valley from WV as well as our many townships there to help
our City dept.
I have been told that the Lynch Agency, Put-on Shop, Pawn Shop and of
course, Haskins Tanner, are gone. Neighbors have smoke and water damage
and I think there are two other businesses gone but I'm not certain what
at this time. This was directly across from the park in 100+ year old
bldgs. One bldg. was called the Lupton block and the Haskins-Tanner
bldg. was occupied at one time by the Franks and Haskins. They were
lovely old structures, reminiscent of the 20th century. I doubt they
will ever be restored or rebuilt to look as they once did. It will
certainly affect the appearance of our historic downtown.
And more devastating is the loss to 5 apartments' occupants as well as
the businesses involved. So, so sad.
Again thanks for all your lovely thoughts...it is easier to respond to
all this way. Henny Evans
