Subject: Two really neat societies...First Families and Civil War
I want to carefully and gently word this response as I know Marty absolutely does not allow any flaming on this list. I think we too often forget that Marty is the sole owner of the list and that he is in no way connected to the Gallia County Genealogical Society to which many members on this list also belong. He graciously allows us to promote our Society through this list.
As Chair of First Families of Gallia County and the Society of Civil War Families of Gallia County, I welcome workshops. We discussed this last year and somehow we just never did it. It came up again in the fall and we said we should have done it, but I must say that my committee, plus one volunteer, and I helped anyone who emailed, wrote or walked in to fill out the papers. In a sense, we held many private workshops and there was absolutely no charge to anyone as far as I am aware. I recognize that this is very much needed as so many of you who are joining and have joined live many miles away.whether it be California or Florida. AND you can only come in when you are in town. Hopefully a workshop would at least pick up locals and nearby members.
It was decided to have a genealogy fair and I thought that was to cover the workshops as I know it is in the minutes that I volunteered to lead the collateral application workshop as so many seemed to have trouble with that one. Once you get the hang of it, it's really easy and my committee has the hang of it. But if you really want workshops separate from the genealogy fair, I would be happy to conduct them.
I think we can be very proud of these two organizations. We have over 670 documented ancestors for First Families and picked up 22 new ones this year. It always amazes me. And first year off the ground, we picked up 92 Civil War soldiers contributed by 78 members.
So, let's promote ourselves as Marty allows and if anyone has any negative comments, please take them off the list to the person with whom you want to speak.
I would welcome any positive comments and suggestions on this list.
