A furnace is a place where coal or oil is burned to produce hot gases. The
hot gases are then passed through pipes in a boiler, filled with water, to
produce steam. The steam is then sent to steam engines to move a boat or a
railroad train, for example. If the steam pressure in the boiler gets too
high, the boiler will explode.
