RE: [OHGALLIA-L] Old Newspaper Clippings (MAYES)
Thanks, Lew......
In the past few years it has occurred to me several times that of all the "grown ups" we had in town when we were small, there were many who were true war heroes with stories to tell.
Instead of reading all those war stories, (To Hell And Back, They Were Expendable, etc) I should have been talking with my elders......

Charlie,
1. Sorry to take so long getting back, my main computer was in the shop for
a week --
Here is one more newsclipping from the Gallipolis Tribune, 1944, concerning
John Mayes:
Pfc. John Mayes German Prisoner
Pfc. John Mayes is alive and a prisoner of the German government.
This news was received this morning by his mother, Mrs. Mollie Singleton
Mayes, 7 Spruce St. The message coming from the International Red Cross was
relayed from Washington.
It brought relief because Sept. 2 word came from the adjutant general that
John was missing in action in France on August 7. He and 17 others had been
captured at the same time.
Mrs. Mayes at once sent todays tiding to Johns wife, who is doing war
work in Springfield, having gone there to visit a brother, Emory Bostic, the
day before the first message came.
Johns two sons by his first marriage Jimmy Dean and Jackie Kent who
are with their grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Morton of Lizemores, Clay
County, W. Va., the Red Cross message was also sent.
2. Somewhat related subject -- I just sent Neil the last of the obituaries
(for Galliagenealogy.org)from Grandma's scrapbook consisting of:
Charles Edward Bowen
George Mathew Ritchie
Mrs. Annabelle (Shaw) Fisher
Mrs. Vesta Fay (Minor) Rose
Mrs. Nancy Miami (Gilmore) Boston
Mrs. Nell Vieva (Reynolds) Franklin
William Johnson
William L. Day

Interesting, Lew, in two aspects.
I recognized the name Molly Mayes and had to look it up. Her son, Charles
Cochrane married Ruby Harrison the sister of my grandmother !
The second reason for the interest was that it reminded me of my Uncle
F. Lawrence Dickey, who was "missing in action" at Hickam Field, Peal
Harbor, HI Dec 7 - Dec 10, 1941.......he was an ambulance driver and was out
doing his job and didn't know he was "missing", but too busy to report in to
anyone.

These are two separate newspaper clippings from the Gallipolis Tribune
during 1944.
NOTE: Information from Ancestry.com documents his POW status from 7 August
1944 . He apparently was discharged as of 30 September 1945 to resume
civilian life.
Clippings taken from my grandmother Abbie Kinder's scrapbook.

Johnnie Mayes Missing In Action
Pfc. Johnnie Mayes of Gallipolis has been missing in action in
France since August 7, his mother, Mrs. Mollie Mayes, was notified today by
the war department. He had been overseas for months.
The missing mans wife left Friday for Springfield, Ohio, to
visit her brother, Emory Bostic. Accosted by a reporter as she was awaiting
a bus, she showed some uneasiness when, replying to a question, she said she
had not heard from Johnnie for three weeks. Today it was learned that his
last letter was dated August 5 two days before he was last seen by the
other members of his infantry unit.
Johnnie was 30 years old last December. Bright, jolly, of
pleasing address, he was known to nearly everyone here; and all his
acquaintances will be hoping for early, definite and more reassuring news as
to his fate.
Gallipolis Tribune newspaper clipping 1944
PVT. Johnnie Mayes, who was reported missing in action in France on August 7
and later learned to be a German prisoner, was making a fine record as a
soldier. This is shown in a letter, now treasured by his mother, Mrs.
Mollie Mayes, Spruce St., from Johnnies captain, Delmot K. Byrn.
This letter says: John E. Mayes was an excellent soldier, and
had an unusually large following of friends. His courage and drive in
combat were an inspiration to his buddies and he often helped them over the
rough spots.
Because of his leadership and attention to duty he was being
considered for promotion to non-commissioned officer just prior to the
engagement in which he was reported missing.
The commander of the infantry company expressed his sorrow over
Johnnies fate and promised further information about him, if and when
obtained.
