I am retyping an old diary that a great-aunt gave me about 32 years ago. She had been sent sections of this diary by a cousin and she gave me a copy as I was just starting into genealogy and thought I would enjoy it. This cousin had sent the part pertaining to people and events of interest to our family. I had not had this out to read for many years but while organizing my papers decided to put it into my computer and onto a disc for safe keeping.
There are several different families mentioned as is birth dates , death dates and marriages of many family members but there is also mention of people living in the Crown City Ohio area that were not family members.
These are some of the surnames Gatewood, Sheets, Sims, Shaw, Short, Brading, Bovie, McClellan, Kerns, Hamilton, Lowry, Donally, Small, Ringold, Booton, Martindale, Martin, Stevens, Blazer and many other family names from the Gallipolis & Crown City areas.
She tells of the many floods on the Ohio River, an earthquake that was felt in the area, the Yellow Fever and Flu epidemics, family members moving to Texas & Tennessee, the opening of OHE, etc. She talks about many births, death and marriages within the family and extended family members. The diary spans several years from 1876-1918.
This diary belonged to Mary Short Gatewood wife of William Gatewood who was the son of James Monroe and Virginia Lowry Gatewood. James and Virginia were the parents of my great-great-grandfather, James Madison Gatewood.
It is my plan to give a copy of this diary to the Gallia County Historical & Genealogical Society when I have finished. Since it is a diary, this information can be used to find documents for many of these event mentioned. This is not the only diary that I possess.
