A group known as the French 500 arrived in Gallipolis in October, 1790 having set sail, for the most part, from La Harve de France in May of that year. They landed first in Alexandria, VA and came overland to Gallipolis. Most of this group felt that they owned land here purchased from the Scioto Company in France. They arrived only to discover that the deeds were fraudulent.
It was not until 1795 that Congress helped them out with new, free land called the French Grant which was never located in Gallia County, but in Scioto County. Settlers had to move and live there 5 years if they wanted this new land.
Many left, many went back to France, or on to St. Louis or even to Washington Co., PA.
There is a lengthy introduction on this topic in Gallipolis, Pictorial History. As one of the authors, I have this book for sale along with such other books as Hardesty's History of Gallia County, an 1882 reprint, and Death Notices, Obituaries, and Marriage Records Taken from the Gallia County Newspapers, 1825 to 1875. This book is excellent for finding those who died without a death record as there were none prior to 1864 and for the most part, prior to 1867. There are several others including an Abstract of Chancery which cover 1835-1853 and has many cases of people who died without a will. The list of settlers below is for Marietta. Before Gallia County became a county in 1803, there was a Gallipolis Twp. in Washington County.
The listowner has given permission to post the books but asks that we keep prices off the list. So, if anyone has an interest, please contact me privately. I will do index look ups. Henny Evans, Gallia OGS Chapter
