The Gallia County Historical and Genealogical Society located at 412 Second Avenue is currently reorganizing our facility due to the judgment of the recent court case. We are currently waiting for an appeal date but until such time we are moving forward. This court case has made our group more determined to continue being the best Historical and Genealogical Society in Southeastern Ohio.
The society is encouraging donations of family histories and research books. We recently received several boxes with volumes of research books, histories, newsletters, etc from individuals which is helping our library to expand. Due to the generosity of wonderful people like these our library is growing by leaps and bounds, we still have several boxes of boxes to catalog and unpack and put on the shelves.
Please stop and see what we have to offer, as always our volunteers are eager to help with any research questions you may have. The Gallia County Historical and Genealogical Society at 412 Second Avenue has always offered our services free of charge except for any copies you may need.
If you enjoy reading old newspapers but get cross eyed trying to read microfilm, we have the place for you, stop and read the actual newspapers in our news room, which we recently created in our expansion efforts. We have newspapers bound in very large books and have tables available for you to sit and at your leisure read and touch the actual newspapers. We have several people that come on a regular basis just to read this little bit of history and you never know what you might find.
We are currently working on several new publications to be published this year and have a wonderful line of items to sell. There is also a Military project, this is an ongoing project of collected photos of individuals that have served in any past war. We have a bio sheets that can be filled out and the information is then placed into a book, the photos are framed (8"x10") and will be placed on a Military wall. There is plans for a mini Military Museum upstairs across from our current museum, which is free of charge. If you would like more information on this project contact the society office at 740-446-7200 and they will put you in contact with someone on the committee.
So, if you are traveling to Gallipolis this year or if you live in Gallia County, stop at 412 Second Avenue and visit the Gallia County Historical and Genealogical Society and see what we have to offer you. We had school tours last year reaching over 600 children, which exposed tomorrows generation to genealogical research techniques and also historical information concerning Gallia County. Again, this is all free of charge. We are open Monday through Friday 10:00 am to 4:00 pm and other times by special appointment. We welcome groups.
