Hi Guys,
As I research the Campbells I would appreciate it if requests could include
at least an estimated year. I only plan to research the Campbells up to
Elijah's children, (last one born abt 1838). I'd like to continue on on
each and every line, but that can get quite time consuming, and I'm under
pressure to get done with a mother who's in her eighties already.
Jacque,
Thomas and India are on the 1900 census on Ancestry under Camel. Don'cha
just love unusual names? The great thing about the 1900 census is it gives
month and year of birth. In this case Thomas was born in December of 1850
(age 49). It gives his state of birth as Ohio. India's birth info is Feb.
1869 and she is (31 years old).
With this info I went back and checked the census records. There's only one
Thomas who was born about 1850 and he is Thomas H. He was the son of Lewis
(alt. sp. Louis 1860) and Harriet Campbell. In the 1850 and 1860 census
they're living in Ohio Twp., and in the 1870 census they're in Mercerville
P.O. Guyan Twp.
Thomas apparently married prior to marrying India. In the 1880 census he's
listed as T.H. Campbell living with his mother, and he is a widower. He was
apparently too young for the Civil War (being only 15 when the war ended) so
he's not on the Veterans schedule of 1890. I've already reported on the
1900 census above.
I don't see him in the 1910 census, or the 1920, but he reappears in the
1930 census, widowed and living with his widowed sister Julia in Gallipolis
District 7. I'm not even going to guess at Julia's married name. :-)
I don't know where he was during that 20 year span, but I did check the
entire state of Ohio for just the name India, and while there were just over
100 hits for both censuses, nothing came close to Campbell and/or Thomas H.
They may have crossed the River into WV or KY, or perhaps someone else gave
his name as Harry or something, I dunno.
This is by no means solid documentation, but it is a place for you to start.
Ellen,
There is a Maurice Campbell in the 1920 (Moris W Gallipolis Ward 4) and 1930
(Gallipolis) census who is listed as the son of George and Effie M born
about 1915. That might be a start. If he's your man then if he married in
Gallia County you should be able to get birthdates and parents names of both
the bride and groom off the marriage certificate. Depending upon when
George and Effie were married, you should be able to get their V.S. off
their marriage record as well.
He has a brother who's 9 years older than he who's name is Merrill, which is
interesting to me, since I have Merrill's in my direct line. This may be
some indication that *if* this is your Maurice we are connected by more than
just our Campbell line. :-) My Campbells are my paternal grandfather's
family and my Merrills are my paternal grandmother's line.
Without knowing an approximate year, that's the best I can come up with.
I hope I've been of some help to both of you,
Linda Trent
