DEATH OF VETERAN
WM. GILL, OF CEDARVILLE, MUSTERED OUT OF EARTHLY SERVICE
CEDARVILLE O., April 6,__ The death of the venerable Wm GILL occurred
last evening at 6 o'clock after many months of weary suffering. For 16
years he had been unable to put his foot to the ground, and for several
years had been confined to the house. During the war he was wounded in
the foot and for many years it had been a running sore. His system had
become so poisoned from this, that cancer of the hand developed which
finally caused his death.
The deceased was born in Trumbull Co., Ohio, 84 years ago and lived
there until 7 years since when he came to this place and made his home
with his sister, the late Mrs. Thos. STRETCHER, for 4 years. At that time
he purchased property in town and settled down with his daughter, Miss
Jennie, to spend the remainder of his days here.
Mr. GILL served through the war, being a member of the 1st W. Va.,
Cavalry, which was an Ohio regiment, originally, but when organized,
Ohio's quota being full, it was transferred to West Virginia, and that
state given credit for the regiment. He was one of the bravest of
soldiers, serving as orderly under General SHIELDS, CUSTER, and AVERILL,
Cavalry officers. He was an intelligent, kindly old man with whom it was
a pleasure to converse. He had been a life long member of the Quaker
Church.
His daughter, Mrs. Dr. FUNDERBURG, of Belmont Co., died a few weeks
ago. Miss Jennie being the only near relative surviving.
The funeral will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the house,
services conducted by Rev. Vance. Buried at Bloksin's bridge.
The grandfather of the deceased was the first person buried at this
burying ground in
the year 1840.
