Tom Stair
Saw your post and thought I'd take a minute to write.
Spent a bit of time last year researching family in Greene Cty
and Yellowsprings where two generations went to Antioch
College. For your info the following.
1) The Xenia Library has an Archive section and a lot of old books and I
found one piece of info but they didn't have very much that would
help that I didn't already know. I was looking for Yellowsprings
information and Antioch College data which wasn't there.
2) Across the street from the Library there's a County records office
and you have to get a number, pay a few bucks for copying and you can go
to the
2nd or 3rd floor (forgot which) and that was a big help in tracking
ownership data in the 1800's on property owned in Yellowsprings and
the chain of title on 2nd ggf's home , now an historical site, who
bought, when, and
how much etc.
3) None of this has anything to do with the old archived records and what
I found is that all the old census records, wills probated, etc. were in
another building several blocks East of the county records building
where old archived records
are kept. There's a lady from England in charge of the archived files and
she was a big help on the history of my 3great uncle's name which was
Ethelbert. Who it turns out was once the name of the King of England.
Here you'll find old wills and lawsuits, etc from the 1800s and if
you're lucky
you'll be able to get copies made if the info is still legible. One of the
assistants there has to help you make the copies. I did find data there.
The access to the archives is up a set of staires to the second floor
and initially
you think - I'm lost and this couldn't be a record storage site..you'd
be wrong.
4) You asked about records that might have been computerized, well
the best you can hope for is microfilced data. But here your best bet is
Wright State University not the county seat. Wright State (Dayton) is
fairly close
and on the 3rd floor of the Library they have an Archive Library which is
excellent and after some effort I was able to find many archived
documents on the
family, land ownership, etc. and sometimes it was necessary to ask for and
review 5 sets of microfilce: 2 in front of and two behind the reel that
the index
said listed the data you were looking for. Lots of reasons for that but
if it was easy and straight forward everyone would do it, just takes
patience.
5) What you didn't ask for is military information on your 1800s
ancestors. If
they were in Ohio/In at time of Civil War the chances of being in the
War were
very high. Ohio sent more soldiers to battle than most of the states
combined.
This data is NOT easily found from military records as at lot of OH
forces were
sent West to battle Indians and those that wanted to fight in CW
self-assigned them-
selves to a battle group going South and might not show up on any exit
rolls from that
unit. What Wright State has is the 2 vol (2,000) page book of "Ohio in
the War"
her statesmen, generals, and soldiers. It was written by Whitelaw Reid and
copyright is 1867. All records were made available to Reid and, as a
student of history,
I found it outstanding. It filled in a lot of gaps for the 1861-64
period that from
my family history I knew existed. My 3rd ggf served, unit unknown, but
affidavites
from a pension request in 1893 by 3ggm verified he was buried in Greene
County
with military honors. This Book was a great find, although the original
copy I
read in the Archives was falling apart and tied together with string.
You can sometimes buy an 1893 copy for several hundred dollars.

>I am needing some guidance. I have really been spinning my wheels with my research in Greene Co. Can someone tell me if there are online resources for early birth, marriage, and death records for the county. I am a direct descendant of a Mary and Statia Bruce. Both born in Greene Co : Statia in 1803 and Mary in 1808, however I have not been able to document this. I suspect they are sisters, but without documentation can't prove it. Both marry in Greene Co; Mary to Jonathan Turner on 5 Dec 1828 and Statia to Jacob Thomas on 29 Nov 1832. Mary and Jonathan's marriage I have documentation for, but not Statia & Jacob. Jonathan and Mary move to Wells Co., IN in the 1840's and I can follow them pretty well. Jacob and Statia are more of a problem. They have three sons, Jesse (b.1834), James (b. 1835), and John (b. 1837). Jacob supposidly dies in 1837, but again no documentation for any of this. Statia remarries Lot Martin in 1839 and shortly afterwards they have a son, !
J!
>oseph Martin (b. around 1840). I can find all of them living with Lot Martin in the 1840 census and then he drops off the face of the earth. By 1850 they have all moved to Wells Co., IN also. Without documentation I am unable to trace backwards. The only documentation for any Bruce I have found to date is Thomas and Mary's marriage and the sale of two peices of property by a James Bruce in 1808. Interestingly a James Bruce shows up for the first time in the 1810 census in Frederick Co., VA where I think the Turners and Thomases may have lived before moving to Greene Co., but this is all speculation unless I can document their activities in Greene Co. Can someone point me toward the records that are available and are any available online or only in hard form in Xenia? Thanks for any help you may be able to provide.
