1. The area that used to be Virginia was as big as the whole other 12
colonies put together almost so a very large part of the population lived in
Virginia at some time.
2. Part of what became Ohio used to belong to Virginia.
3. A lot of the men who fought in the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812
were given land as pay for their service because the young US government did
not have enough money to pay all the soldiers and land was of more value
than money. Also, giving land helped encourage people to move into
unsettled territory and expand the country.
