Terry,
I think we are talking about the same Reese Thompson. The reason he "disappeared" is because according to Mary Payne Thompson's obit they moved from Wayne County, OH in 1857 to Wisconsin. They lived in St. Croix County, Wisconsin in 1880 and moved to Washington State (Whatcom County!) in 1889! Love to share more with you.
I found on a Whatcom County, Washington site; a Biography of Whitman Palmer, son-in-law of Reese and Mary Thompson. In it there is more info on Reese stating that "he was born in Wheeling, WV and that Reese was a farmer in Ohio and a cabinet maker and moved with the family to Wisconsin when his wife, Sarah Jane Thompson (Jennie) was only 4 years old." Sarah Jane (Jennie) was born July 24, 1853 in Antirm, OH.
