Dear all,

Probably nearly all of you can help me. At least, I hope so. I am looking
for information on what is, in some ways, a very broad topic: undertaking in
antebellum Cincinnati. I am trying to get a sense not only of the business
of undertaking but also the experience of funerals and the treatment of the
dead.

If any of you have come across mention of a funeral in the 1840s or 1850s,
I'd much appreciate the reference. Or, perhaps you have seen a diary or
letter or newspaper article which mentions a funeral, a dead body, a coffin
company (Crane & Breed), or a burial. Any and all would be helpful to me.

I'm a Ph.D. student at Ohio State, and this is my current project, "Charming
Anguish: The Social Role of Undertakers in Antebellum Cincinnati."

Included below is is a list of undertakers that I have found in my
researches so far. You all might find it interesting to know who was doing
undertaking at certain times, and perhaps, might have additional information
to suggest or add about some of these folks. Who knows, they may even be
your ancestors!
