Dear Hamilton County List:
Mary HAGNEY was born 15 March 1862, place unknown. Until September 30,
1867, the woman taking care of her was my gggrandmother, named Jane
(Armstrong) GREEN or Jane (Armstrong) ROBINSON, b. 1832 Ireland. In
addition to Mary, my gggrandmother, a Confederate widow, took care of
her own children, Matthew GREEN, b. 1857 and Jennie GREEN, b. 1859. They
lived someplace, still unknown in Cincinnati from about 1863 until Sept.
30th of 1867. On that date, Jane Green was found unfit to take her
children back from the House of Refuge and all three children were
committed to the Children's Home. In late October, all three children
were sent to homes in Plainfield, Indiana.
Their story must be very sad, because my ggrandmother would not talk
about it to her own children and grandchildren. Jane Green died February
28, 1879 in Cincinnati. I am still in the process of finding her death
certificate (I found her death notice yesterday). She was 48 years old
when she died. My ggrandmother believed that her mother was buried in
Price Hill Cemetery. I have not yet checked the cemetery records for any
mention of Jane Green. Wish me luck!
