Hello Bryan,

An interesting story, isn't it? Unfortunately I don't know exactly when
Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Wellmann was born, he never mentioned his age or =
his birthday in his diary; the only things I know is when he emigrated to =
Baltimore (1859) and when he died (1863). But I can try to estimate the
year of his birth, because (attention, this is just a theory...):
It is known that two farmers named Wellmann emigrated from Damme into the =
USA in 1848. They were on board of the ship "Huntingdon" and arrived at
the port of Baltimore on August 30, 1848. On the passengers' list of this =
ship they are registered
29) Joh. Wellmann, 42, male, farmer
30) Marianne Wellmann, 31 (??), female, farmer
So, if Joh(ann) Wellmann is Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Wellmann's father, he=
was born in 1806. This could mean that his son was born at the end of the =
1820s or in the first half of the 1830s. If this is true, Johann Friedrich=
Wellmann was about 30 years old when he emigrated to Baltimore in 1859.

This could be useful, all the same. Normally, if I knew Wellmann's date of=
birth, the National Archives could give me more information about his
military career. The NATF Form 80 for military service record research is =
already on my desktop...

I didn't try the 1860 census yet. Can you give me more information about
how to get these kinds of records?

A professor of the near-by University of Oldenburg handed me out his copy =
of this diary when he saw that I was interested in this matter. The copy
is not very good, two pages are missing, and unfortunately the professor
doesn't remember where he got it from... perhaps in Oldenburg, Indiana. As=
far as I know, the diary was never published.
No, I'm not related of all. All this is "just" part of a school project
about emigration. Some of my students actually try to write down the
diary's text, and my additional work is to find out more details about
Wellmann's roots and intentions.
Thank you for your interest.
