Bryan,
Here is what I found out from the Stones River National Battlefield
regarding Wilhelm Wellman, immigrant to Hamilton Co. and Union soldier. He
is buried here in the National Cemetery in section B474. He originally was
buried at Cripple Creek which is an area east of here. He was moved to his
present grave but they didn't have record of when that occurred. He is
listed in the Roll of Honor, pg. 318. She confirmed that he was a member of
the 10th Ohio Infantry.
The Park Ranger that I talked to was interested in obtaining the diary, or a
copy for the museum. She was concerned that the students and teacher handle
the original carefully, if it is in their possession, e.g. not handle it
with bare hands.
For more information they could contact the Stones River National
Battlefield at the following e-mail address:
As a frequent visitor to the battlefield, museum, and cemetery I would
encourage them to please send a copy (at least) to the museum. I would like
to see it as I know others would. I think it would be helpful as period
material since I also had relatives from Ohio who served during the Civil
War and may have fought here. There are many of us Northerners (yes, Yankee
is still a fighting word here) who have moved into this area in recent
years.
Hope this is of help to Mr. Pohl and his students. Glad to be of help.
