I find this appalling. What is the purpose of an historical society, if
not to share history? Most of my Hamilton County ancestors were there
very early-1790's to 1800's. I have hit many brick walls, especially
with the Rowan line. It seems that if they moved over into Butler
County, I have volumes of information on them, but if they died or
stayed in Hamilton County, they disappeared. Now I find out that the
historical society is sitting on information that may be significant.

I have gone into many courthouses in Virginia to do research on my husbands
family, many adoption records were not closed in the earlier years, to
believe that they were not public in the 1800's is absurd to me. I have never
had any problem in seeing them here. Unfortunately once while doing research
in Miami Township Ohio, I had a clerk act as if the records were hers and it
seemed to pain her a great deal to open one of the files that was about my
family, I had documented proof to back me up. The files were indeed public,
no one had ever ask to see them before. I believe whom ever was in charge on
this day at the Historical Society needs to be ask where they get their
information as to what was public and what wasn't in the 1800s and show proof.

Re the following exerpt from a posting by Linda Boorom regarding will
and estate records housed at the historical society:
"I was told by the Historical Society that these were not public
records,
and noone was allowed to view them as some of the records contain
information about adoptions (early 1800's???), as well, these "index's"
wouldn't give us any additional info anyway. Back in March 1997 I spoke
with Julie Ross whom I had found out had helped to compile these
listings for the Hamilton Co. section of Carol Bell's book. She told me
that she only remembers them as being index's and didn't give any
addditional info, but didn't know if the Historical Soc. had any of the
actual records that went with the index's.
Of course, we will never know if noone is permitted to 'view' them and I
have been unable to find out any other information about these records."
I find this appalling. What is the purpose of an historical society, if
not to share history? Most of my Hamilton County ancestors were there
very early-1790's to 1800's. I have hit many brick walls, especially
with the Rowan line. It seems that if they moved over into Butler
County, I have volumes of information on them, but if they died or

historical society is sitting on information that may be significant.
What can be done about that?
