I have a record from the State of Illinois, Archives Division Public
Domain
Sales Land Tract Records Listing showing my ancestor obtained land in
Crawford County, Ill. by Warrant 1-18-1853. This does not come up
on the
Federal Land Patent Records Site.

Apparently he was not the original recipient of this piece of
property.
Under what other circumstances would land be obtained with a Warrant
instead
of a cash purchase
