The recent notes on this list about handwriting and spelling definitely
point out the need to be open-minded about looking for alternate
spellings. I can attest to several in my own research. And just this week
I received a letter from someone whose last name started with L but by the
handwriting I could have sworn it was an S.
We were unable to locate my gggrandparents marriage date. Robert Rau
finally located it for us with a little prompting regarding the bride's
name by the fact that it was alphabetized under S because the name was
written RutenSchroer in handwriting with a bit of a flourish.
On my maternal side I found the records in the church records, but just
happened to notice when looking for Kern that the ggrandparent
Krueger/Seedorf was listed Kerugre in the restored records (or something
similar, I don't remember exactly now) and I remember comparing it with
the original and it was a logical misreading that could have been done by
someone unfamiliar with the name.
So take a look and weigh the evidence. The right answers hide pecularily
sometimes.
