Subject: [OHHAMILT] Follow-up to the Draper Paper and Mary Covalt narratives

I am so glad to hear that folks enjoyed reading about the early settlers in
Hamilton County, Ohio, and the difficulties of life in those times. For all of
us who had ancestors who risked their lives and the lives of their families
to move ever westward, it is with tremendous respect and
admiration....actually, AWE...that we read about the accounts of their lives.
We hold them in a special place in our hearts and though we didn't know them,
we love them. Yet....there is another story here. For those of you who may be
interested in that story, I suggest you read "A Sorrow In Our Hearts, the
Life of Tecumseh", by Allan W. Eckert. It is the Indian side of the story,
about the Shawnees who were suddenly faced with the destruction of their way
of life. If ever there were two cultures destined to comfront each other and
so different in all respects, it is the Native American and the European
American. Eckert draws frequently on the Draper Papers and you will find the
events of these narratives told from the Indian point of view. I have not
read "The Frontiersman" by Eckert but have been told it is equally excellent.
He thoroughly documents everything and even corrects his previously published
errors!
