GEORGE A. BOHRER, of the firm of Newman & Bohrer, proprietors of the Spring
Brewery, Lafayette, is a native of Bavaria, Germany, born near Zweibrucken
on the 27th of December, 1819, a son of VALENTINE and SOPHIA BOHRER. He was
left an orphan at a very early age, his mother dying when he was an infant,
and his father when he was but eight years of age. He was reared in his
native country until eleven years old, when he came to America with his
brothers and sisters, they settling in Cincinnati, Ohio. He grew to manhood
in Cincinnati, receiving his education in the schools of that city, and
afterward learned the shoemaker's trade. Later he engaged in the grocery
business with a relative, and was thus employed about six years, awhen he
sold his interest in the business, and for nearly two years kept a hotel.
He then turned his attention to the livery and undertaking business, which
he followed until 1871 when he sold out, and in 1872 came to Lafayette. The
same year he bought the interest of DIETRICH HERBERT, who was until then
associated with MR. NEWMAN in the Spring Brewery, under the name Newman &
Herbert, when the present firm of Newman & Bohrer was established. In his
political affiliations MR. BOHRER is a Democrat.
