Thanks to Bob Niehaus for his detailed description of the archives in
the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. Jeffrey Herbert was also granted access
to compile his excellent indexes of restored marriage records and now
death records. I work for the Archdiocese of Indianapolis, and back in
1989 it allowed the LDS to microfilm its early sacramental records. Our
archives have only one part time staff person, and it is a big help for
her to be able to refer people to the microfilms. There is a complete
set in the state library genealogy department here in Indianapolis, and
of course you can rent them through any LDS Family History center.
I wonder if the Archdiocese of Cincinnati would consider the
microfilming of early records, following either the 75 year restriction
used for census records, or the 100 year limit used in many European
countries. It would obviously cost a lot to do this, but I suspect if
the word got out a lot of us researchers would be willing to contribute
to the project. There would also be an organizational element. The
parishes would probably need to send their books to a central place, and
then have them returned. It would also be possible to use another
microfilmer. Some films of cemetery statistics cards I have used at the
Cincinnati/Hamilton County library were done by Wright State. But you
do lose the national access the LDS provides.
Of course, we are not the only place this issue occurs. Many of us from
the Cincinnati area had relatives who lived on either side of the
Oldenburg/Hannover boundary in Germany. Both the Catholic and Lutheran
church authorities in the former Hannover territory did not allow
filming of records, the former Oldenburg territory did.
