Hi Pat, from "Cincinnati, a Guide to the Queen City and its Neighbors"
WPA 1943:
"The Spencer House, rising on the site in 1853, became one of the
celebrated hotels of the Middle West. Merchants, planters, drummers,
and travelers stopped here for many years. In 1866 the Spencer House
gave a lavish reception for President Johnson, Secretary of State
Steward, Admiral Farragut, and Generals Grant, Rousseau and Custer. For
a time Charlotte Cushman, the actress, owned the hotel. With the
passing of the steamboat era, the Spencer House declined; in more recent
years, it did duty as a rooming house for wharfmen and laborers. It was
razed in 1935."
