Nancy,
I don't remember ever hearing that Music Hall was built over an old
cemetery. A book I have which contains a very brief history of Music Hall
says that it was dedicated in 1881. It was built on the site of the
Saengerfest Halle which was razed in 1877. The Saengerfest Halle was built
ca.1870 on the site of the Cincinnati Orphan Asylum which was located there
from 1830 to 1861 (they moved to Mt. Auburn in 1861). I suppose the
orphanage may have had an on-site cemetery???
Washington Park, which Music Hall faces, used to be a cemetery. The
same book with the brief history states: "Four Protestant cemeteries
occupied this land before 1855. Then the city ordered the bodies exhumed
and the park opened in 1861." I vaguely seem to recall hearing that the
bodies were removed to Spring Grove, but I'm really not sure. The Spring
Grove web site may have that information.
As for being haunted because of missed graves-- I've never heard that,
but then I did see "Poltergeist"... :-)
The book I got this info from is called "Cincinnati: Over-the-Rhine" by
Robert J. Wimberg, published by the Ohio Book Store, 726 Main Street,
Cincinnati, 45202; 513-621-5142. It is more a pictoral guide to the history
of O-t-R than a detailed history. It's about 100 pages, and when I bought it
several years ago, it cost $15-20. When we lived in Cincinnati Mr. Wimberg
used to give excellent walking tours of the historic neighborhoods (he may
still for all I know). His knowledge is amazing. The Ohio Book Store does
not have a website that I'm aware of, but it's worth writing them for a list
of publications-- they have published a lot of local history books
(including several by Wimberg) and they are also a used book store,
specializing in local history titles.
Hope this helps.
Juliann,
a Cincinnatian lost in Connecticut
