While we are on the subject of books, not wishing to abuse the privilege of being on this list, I did research and publish a book with another person this year on the Cincinnati Fire Stations. I bring it up because I have found several firemen in my family and discovered great resources while doing the research. Beginning in 1853, when Cincinnati began the first paid municipal fire department that also used steam engines and horses, they also began issuing yearly reports. In those early reports, I found names of the firemen, place of birth (usually by country), their ages, addresses, and the position that they held. I found it to be a great addition to my family history. Some reports also listed salaries for the different positions. These reports were found at the Cincinnati Historical Society Library/Archives. I also found additional older photos that helped identify a photo that I had of my great grandmother's brother. Copies of the old station photos can be obtained (for !
a fee) from the library and will greatly add new dimension to your research.
