Subject: John Nees and Lydia? Help!
Date: Mon, 17 May 2004 19:41:08 -0500

I'm needing information concerning John Nees/Neese. His family lived in Springfield, Hamilton County Ohio. I don't feel that John was from Hamilton County, possibly his wife was as I can find no other Nees/Neese's in Springfield, but their family. Hoping someone can give me some type of information.

First census I found was 1850 census.

Springfield, Hamilton County
John Nees age 33 b. pa
Lydia Nees age 31 b. OH
Martin Nees age 6 b. OH
Emily Nees age 3 b. OH

1860 Census Springfield, Hamilton County
Eveline Man age 37 b. OH
Lucinda Man age 18 b. OH
John Nees age 42 b. PA
Lydia Nees age 42 b. OH
Martin Nees age 18 b. OH
Emily Nees age 12 b. OH
Elmore age 3 b. OH

I do not know Eveline's connection. Johns sister? Lydia's sister? I've tried tracking her and get back to 1850, at that time she was living with Horation Sherman in Delaware County. Horatio was a teacher. Eveline wasn't listed as a student, Her relationship was blank, along with her children. Flora age 11, Thomas C age 10 and Lucinda age 8.

1870 Springfield Hamilton County
John Neese age 53
Lydia Neese age 53
Emily Neese age 22
Elmore Neese age 17
Martin A Neese age 8

Martin A. Neese , I am assuming, is the son of Martin Van Buren Neese and Caroline Snodgrass and grandson to John and Lydia. I haven't verified this by records, etc, but everything fits. Martin Neese married Caroline Snodgrass in Jul 1861 in Hamilton County Ohio. Martin A Neese was born Jul 1862 in Hamilton County Ohio. Martin Neese was killed during the civil war in 1863. I cannot find Caroline at all, no idea if she died, if she remarried. Nothing. I'm in the process of obtaining civil war service records and pension records hoping to verify this. There are no other Neese's around so I'm making the assumption this is correct for now until I am proved otherwise. I have received the death certificate of Martin A Neese, his father is listed as Allison, mother Caroline. Martin's middle name was Allison and I am assuming this is where the Allison came from.

In 1880 Mount Pleasant, Hamilton County

Benjamin Whallon age 21(?)
Emma Whallon age 31
Lydia Neese (listed as Nilse) age 52 Mother
Elmore Neese age 24 BIL
Martin Neese age 18 BIL
Andrew Whallon 11 brother

So John Neese died between 1870 and 1880. After 1880 I also lost Lydia, Elmore and Benjamin and Emma. Elmore was listed as female in some census records and male in others.

Martin A. Neese married Carrie A. Moore, daughter of William and Elizabeth Moore.

Families living nearby during all census records were Laboyteaux and Hoffner. Thinking Lydia may have some connection to them.

I'm at a brick wall on this family and could use any help anyone could give!
