Information on death certificates isn't always accurate, either. One of my
ancestors died in a Catholic hospital for cancer patients and her death info
was supplied by a nun who had only cared for her in her illness. The Sister
did the best she could, but the parents names were wrong.

Have you looked for William in the 1870 and 1880 census? Maybe his
neighbors might give you a clue. Who were their neighbors in the 1900
census? Who else is buried near them? What are the names of their
children? Was there a naming pattern for the children? Sometimes the first
and second born sons were named for grandfathers, Was a usual surname used
for any given names of the children? Was there an obituary for Nellie? If
she had brothers or nephews surviving maybe they were listed or served as
pallbearers. Sounds like you are beating a dead horse for the marriage
information, try another tack. Hope this helps. Carole
