FIRE
On Friday morning last between the hours of 12 and 1 o'clock, the new brick
dwelling house of Rev. John Walker New Athens, was entirely consumed by fire.
Happily no lives were lost, and the principal part of the best furniture was,
by great exertions, saved from the blames; but the most of the body clothes
belonging to the family, a desk containing papers, some books, and other smaller
articles were burnt. The carpenters had just completed the work on the 2nd
story on Thursday. The fire is supposed to have communicated from some small
shavings and saw dust which had been swept into the fire-place upstairs where
some fire had been kindled late in the evening. The precise amount of loss has
not been fully determined, it must, however, have been considerable.
On Tuesday the 14 inst. the dwelling house of Henry Maffit of this township
was entirely consumed by fire, together with the whole of it contents, the
family being absent at the time.
