I've been hoping there was more interest in the Guthrie name so I could
identify Bula Guthrie, who was a ward of Jonathan and Elizabeth Sprague
in Huron County on March 5, 1816. Henry Timman came upon a signed
letter through a collector and was kind enough to pass along a copy to
me. To properly identify Jonathan, the writer of the letter, he is the
father of Jonathan, Jr., and is not to be confused (as Margaret Cherry
did) with the father of Jonathan S. Sprague from Canada nor Jonathan
Sprague from Connecticut in Trumbull County.
To continue: Jonathan was writing from Bloomingville, Ohio, to Joseph
Guthrie of Sherburn, Chenango County, Ohio, and states his strong
dissatisfaction with the expenses charged against the estate of James
Guthrie, who was apparently the father of Bula. He also says to let
"your brother John & Mr. Tilly Lynde see this letter". I assume James,
John and Joseph were brothers. Tilly Lynde was a large land owner
(probably absentee) and was charging expenses against the estate.
James estate was probated in Cuyahoga Co. (from which Huron Co.was
later set apart) on 1 June 1813. (Probate Record #1, p. 139) Anselm
Guthrie was appointed Administrator of estate. There is also an estate
in the same book for David B. Guthrie (same record, p. 142). Anselm was
married to Amanda Perry but divorced and left for Canada in 1817. There
is reference to the Guthries being early settlers before War of 1812 as
was old Jonathan from Vermont. Cuyahoga County records other than the
index have been lost.
Bula married William Sly in Huron County in 1827 but haven't tracked
her since then. Was Elizabeth Sprague, the second wife of old Jonathan
(and never identified), the mother, grandmother, or relative of Bula?
Elizabeth signed the letter with an "x". Or was Bula a grandchild of
Jonathan?
Anything sound familiar to anyone? Thanks for any help.
