Greetings to the Mail List.
Don't know if you're interested in seeing if your computer is Y2K ready,
but I just went through a testing exercise with my two year old
computer (Compaq Presario 2120), using a software test package made
available free from NSTL (National Standards Testing Lab), and I offer
the following in case you want to try it on your computers The test
package is called YMARK2000.
1. Go to www.NSTL.com.
2. Go to YMARK2000 (NSTL's Year 2000 System Compliance Testing Tool).
3. Go to Instructions for Using NSTL's YMARK2000. This page will give
you the instructions you need to run the test, as well as a link to
"Download YMARK2000 from NSTL's web site." After downloading, you can
run the test from DOS prompts. or copy the file to a 3.5" floppy disk
and run the test from this disk. I chose to copy to a disk. Be sure to
remember the path to the file where the software is saved on your hard
disk.
4. The YMARK2000 software will test your computer for:
a. the compatibility of your hardware clock with Motorola's MC146818.
b. progression to the year 2000, and
c. accommodating 21st century leap years.
The test summary will indicate if your system correctly supports the
year 2000 (coded as "0"), or if there are shortcomings that need to be
corrected. In my case, my computer passed the test and was found to be
year 2000 ready, but a separate source suggested a ROM BIOS upgrade was
in order.
Another link on the same page as the Instructions Page gives a list of
products that meet NSTL's Year 2000 Compliance Testing Standards. Here
you can click on the name of the manufacturer of your computer, and then
on your specific model, to see the results.
Regards,
Ken Shute ().
