According to most texts on the matter, the 1890 census bore the brunt of the
firefighters efforts to put out a fire in the storage area where this census
was stored. It the fire didn't get the census, the water from the firehoses
did. Efforts were made to save as much as possible so there are portions
available. The main part that is available in fiche format is the civil war
pensioners section which includes widows and vets who were receiving
pensions from the federal government.
