Hi Deb, it means "Grand Army of the Republic"

I found this below by going to askjeeves.com and then a page will come up
where you can ask a question. Several things will come up usually for you
to look through. I use this search engine a lot. Another one I use is
goggle.com

: What does GAR stand for? and what type of organization were they?

: : Teri:

: : Those small star shaped markers are indeed the work of the GAR.
: : They were placed in a veteran's grave at the time of his passing.
: : Many have the number of the GAR Post on them. Some are of Iron,
: : others are of bronze and still later one are manufactured of Aluminum.
: : Those of Aluminum are generally replacements for older one that have
: : disappeared over the last 130 years or so. To find lists of these markers
: : is not impossible, but nearly so, as each post's quartermaster kept a
log of the
: : member's grave's they had marked. You would have to find the repository
of
: : your local GAR records. Don't let people tell you they do not exist
because
: : in 95 peercent of the cases they do exist. Local musuems, Local
historians,
: : Your friendly American Legion Post or VFW might be good places to look.
One word of
: : caution though as in all organization records do get lost and not all
post records are
: : complete.

: : Good Luck

GAR stands for Grand Army of the Republic. That was the veterans'
organization for the Northern soldiers.
