For Tom Tremble.

Hi Tom,

To recap briefly some of the points covered in my look- up findings I sent
you 22 March, 1999:

The only daughter of Samuel PRESTON was Lucy B. PRESTON. Lucy m. Frederick
WICKHAM in 1835. Samuel PRESTON started the (Norwalk) Reflector newspaper in
1830.

A son of Samuel PRESTON's was Charles A. PRESTON. A daughter of Charles' was
Lucy E. PRESTON. Lucy m. Edward C. CULP 29 Nov 1864. Thus Lucy B. PRESTON was
the aunt of Lucy E. PRESTON.

My wife bought our History of the Fire Lands, by W.W. Williams, 1879, many
years ago. It was a reprint made in 1985 through the sponsorship of the
Firelands Historical Society, 4 Case Ave., Norwalk, OH 44875. You might try
contacting them to see if they can give you any leads, try used book dealers,
or try for an inter-library loan. The publisher of our book was Whipporwill
Publications, 4400 Jackson Ave., Evansville, IN 47715. While the Fire Lands
book has several references to the PRESTONs and the WICKHAMs, there is only
one brief reference to Edward C.Culp on page 49. That was to the fact that he
was sheriff of Huron County, Ohio 1869-1873.

The History of Huron County, Ohio by A.J. Baughman, 1908, is being sold by
the Huron County Chapter of OGS (HCC/OGS). While this book contains no
reference to CULP in the index, there is a fair amount of information on the
WICKHAM and PRESTON families. Details can be found on the HCC/OGS home page:

I subscribe to the Huron County mail list. Quite often, Ken, you send a
reply to someone which includes a reference to the History of the Firelands
book.Nancy, I notice more than frequent cemetery lookups that you contribute.
You both must spend untold hours on behalf of others -- my congratulations.

I have maternal Great-Great Grandparents from the area -- Col. Edward C Culp
of the 25 Ohio Volunteer Infantry (born somewhere in a nearby county I
think). He lived in Huron county and about 1870, was the Sheriff of Huron
County for some years, His wife was, Lucy Preston, whom he married in
1865-6. Lucy's father, grandfather, or perhaps an uncle -- not sure which as
there are two Lucy Preston -- was Charles Preston I believe. HE was the
publisher of the Recorder (or similar name), a newspaper of the mid-1800's.
The story I am told is that he built a house for his daughter, the first
Lucy, when she was married in about 1835. This house was the office of the
newspaper for many years, and I think is now the office of the Historical
Society in Norwalk, OH.

My question: Is there a way to obtain a copy of the History of the Firelands
book, either by photocopy or preferably a real printed version? If so,
where/who would I contact? Also, are there any other publications that
would be available and include references to Preston or Culp family members?

Second, I would appreciate your suggestions on the best way to research this
end of my family. I haven't started as yet beyond collecting some clippings
and other stuff from relatives and from Col. Culp directly (including a few
letters to Lucy during the Civil war, one noting the Battle of Gettysburg. I
also have a copy of his book on the 25th Ohio Vol. Infantry. I would be
happy to look up any references for others should that be useful -- I did
that for two others a few months ago
(I can now scan pages and send an Acrobat PDF file rather than type stuff!).

Any suggestions either of you can offer to point me in the right directions
would be appreciated. At some point, I'd like to arrange a trip to the area
for some hands-on research. Meanwhile, I rely on the internet.

Thanks very much in advance.
