Nancy,

The Staley/Stealy family you describe was found in 1860 in Cass Twp.,
Village of Planktown, Richland County, Ohio in 1860 census, indexed as
Israel Stelly, on p. 211/389 h/h 1471/1510. I could not find them in Huron
Co., Ohio.

One suggestion -- if you ask yourself how Lucy and Israel met, then you
might consider the possibility that they lived near each other in
Richland/Ashland County. (Note that Milton Twp straddles the
Richland/Ashland County line.

There's a Staley family one page over from Joseph Heltman in 1840 Milton
Twp., Richland County. Head of household is Israel age 40-50 with several
males in the h/h of the right age for your Israel. In 1850, this Israel
Stealey, born about 1793 in Pa. is in Milton Twp., Ashland county. In
1860, Daniel and the son and daughter-in-law who were living with Israel in
1850 (George and Caroline) are found in Elkhart Co., Indiana. It appears
Israel elder, age 68, was still in Milton Twp. living with the William and
Barbara Fulmer family and indexed as Israel Stanley. The elder Israel then
reappears in 1870 in Harrison, Elkhart Co., Indiana living with Daniel and
family.

In 1870 and 1880, there are also some intriguing entries for a younger
Israel, born about 1826 in Pennsylvania and living in Illinois. See Israel
Staley, age 41 and Phebe J. in 1870 census of Joliet Ward 4, Will County,
Illinois, p. 231, h/h 70/83. The same couple (Stealey) can be found in 1880
in Morris, Grundy County, Illinois, ED 9, p. 352a, h/h 130/133. There are
Ford children living with this couple in both 1870 and 1880, perhaps Phebe's
children from an earlier marriage? This may not be your Israel, but the age
is about right.

Here's an online index for the cemeteries in Harrison Twp, Elkhart Co.,
Indiana (among other twps) at
http://www.rootsweb.com/~inelkhar/Cemeteriesv2.htm. There are several
Stealy burials, including two entries for Israel. Perhaps it would be
worthwhile to ask for a cemetery lookup and check for a probate record for
the elder Israel to see if there's any mention of your Israel or his
children?

I hope this helps in some way, Nancy.
