Wilma,

Cookies are small files that contain bits of information about you
and your web browsing choices. For instance, your name, address,
email name, etc. They allow web sites to communicate with
other web sites also. They also support customization of the
response that you will get from (certain) web pages.
The next time you visit that site, or a closely-related site,
the cookie file's data is retrieved from your computer for the
site's use. Since the file is only a text file you should
never be able to get a virus from it.
