Jean,

If you know where the family came from, such as from ship records
or naturalization records, that would help. Then you could join a list
for that area in Germany where people might recognize the places or if
recently, maybe even the people. I have had wonderful experiences with
both Mecklenburg and Brandenburg lists. Then you will really need that
translator.
Another suggestion - there is a Salt Lake Christmas Tour the
first week of December. That group has Kevan Hansen and Trudy Schenk
there for individual help and translation for attendees. You might
consider a week in Salt Lake City. See www.rootsweb.com/~ohlcgs and look
for the plane. You don't have to be from Lake County to join our group
out there.
www.familysearch.org has some research helps. I think you can
get the German Word List there. If not, you can order it for a couple of
dollars from the LDS church distribution center. It really helps with
figuring things out.
