Dear Researchers of the Lawrence County, Ohio Mailing List,
Joshua HORNER lived at Kelley's Mills on Pine Creek, Lawrence County,
Ohio about 1824, according to "William Louderback's Recollection of
Union Furnace", as posted on the Lawrence County Register website.
William LOUDERBACK stated in 1892 that he went to live with Joshua
HORNER when he [William] was about 13 years old, and he was born in
1811.
If you will check on a map, you will see that Kelley's Mill Road and
Pine Creek are located on the western border of Lawrence County in
Elizabeth Township, almost in Scioto County's Green Township. The
community of Kelley's Mills was only about five miles from Haverhill,
Scioto County, which is directly across the Ohio River from the village
of Greenup, Kentucky.
In the 1830 Census of Elizabeth Township, Lawrence County, Ohio, Joshua
HORNER, Moses HORNER and Charles COOPER were enumerated on page 306. In
1826, South Carolinian John MEANS built Union Furnace, which was the
first iron furnace in southern Ohio. Union Furnace was located about a
mile and a half from Kelley's Mills. Thus, the HORNERs and Charles
COOPER may have been employed by Union Furnace. William LOUDERBACK
hauled charcoal to Union Furnace when it began running. He was 14 years
old at the time.
My object is to learn more about the people and subjects
above-mentioned, so, if your interests run along these lines, let's
further the thread. Thanks!
