Subject: Shafer or Shaver Family in Lawrence County
Date: Sun, 20 Feb 2005 13:40:23 EST
I'm looking for anyone who may be researching the Shafer Family in Lawrence
County. Squire and Spicy Shaver (Shafer) came to Lawrence County bewteen 1860
and 1870. Spicy was of mixed race and a sister to George W. Rogers also in
Lawrence County. The Shafer children are generally called "mulatto" although as
they came to OH, the spelling pretty much exclusively became SHAFER.
Descendants of Spicy Rogers
Generation No. 1
1. Spicy2 Rogers (Ansel1) was born 1822 in Virginia. She married
Squire Shaver. He was born 1820 in North Carolina (Richmond or Rowan Co?).
Notes for Spicy Rogers:
Spicey married Squire Shaver about 1840. She and Squire can be found in 1850
Sullivan County living in Holston Valley. In that record, Spicey is called
"mulatto" as are their young children. Squire is referred to as "white". By
1860, they have moved to the Blountville area with the entire family referred
to as "white" by the census taker. Her son, Andrew can also be found in
Blountville an apparent young widower (18) with a son, John.
Sometime between 1860 and 1870 the family leaves Sullivan County and Spicy
and children can be found in Union Township of Lawrence County, Ohio. Squire is
apparently dead by then [Note: Spicy is called "Jane" here -- I've seen no
other public records referring to her as Jane but I'm certain this Jane is same
as Spicy.] As the family moves to Ohio, the spelling seems to shift to SHAFER
but the "mulatto" designation continues in most of the family members.
Spicy [called "S Shafer"] is living with daughter Sarah Day in 1880 in
Fayette Township of Lawrence County. Although her nephew James Rogers' 1906
Guionn-Miller application states he knew she was last alive in Ohio I have been
unable to find her in 1900 or later census records.
Although no conclusive proof exists, I believe that "Fanny Witcher", wife of
Isham is the same Frances M. Shaver, daughter of Spicy and Shaver. And,
Elizabeth Shafer was likely either the wife of Anthony Kincaide or John Bailey.
And, Dryden P is likely known as Phillip in later years.... More proof is
required to make these connections.
Children of Spicy Rogers and Squire Shaver are:
+ 2 i. Andrew M.3 Shaver, born 1843.
3 ii. Eliza J. Shaver, born 1844.
4 iii. James Shaver, born 1846.
5 iv. Nathaniel Shaver, born 1848. He
married Martha McMasters; born 1858.
6 v. Frances M. Shaver, born 1850.
7 vi. Dryden P. Shaver, born 1852.
+ 8 vii. Sarah R. E. Shaver, born 1856.
Generation No. 2
2. Andrew M.3 Shaver (Spicy2 Rogers, Ansel1) was born 1843. He
married (2) Emily M.. She was born 1847 in North Carolina.
Notes for Andrew M. Shaver:
Andrew M. Shaver was born in Sullivan County,TN and married young. In 1860,
he can be found near Blountville, TN as an apparent widower and young son
John. John is not with his father in 1870 Ohio and has apparently either died or
remained behind with other family members. Between 1860 and 1870, Andrew
served in the Union Army and apparently lived for some time in Indiana (around
1867) as his eldest daughter was born in IN. Andrew's racial designation varies
from "mulatto" in 1850 to "white" in 1870 to "black" in 1880.
Child of Andrew M. Shaver is:
9 i. John4 Shaver, born 1859 in
Blountville, Sullivan County, TN.
Children of Andrew Shaver and Emily M. are:
10 i. Mary J.4 Shaver, born 1867 in
Indiana.
11 ii. Emaline M. A. Shaver, born May 1870
in Lawrence County, OH.
12 iii. Joseph A. Shaver, born 1872 in
Lawrence County, OH.
13 iv. Spicey E. Shaver, born 1874 in
Lawrence County, OH.
14 v. Maria E. Shaver, born 1876 in
Lawrence County, OH.
15 vi. James J. Shaver, born 1878.
8. Sarah R. E.3 Shaver (Spicy2 Rogers, Ansel1) was born 1856. She
married Joshua Day 12 Jan 1872 in Lawrence County, OH. He was born 1851 in
Ohio.
Notes for Sarah R. E. Shaver:
Although not completely conclusive, it is assumed that the Sarah Shafer whose
marriage is recorded in Lawrence County 1872 to Joshua Day is the daughter of
Spicy and Squire Shaver. In 1880, a "S Shafer" is recorded as Joshua's
mother-in-law adding more circumstantial proof along with the racial "mulatto"
designation for Sarah. The primary "detractor" is that census records in 1880
indicate that Sarah was born in OH which is not accurate.
Children of Sarah Shaver and Joshua Day are:
16 i. John4 Day, born 1873.
17 ii. Ollie Day, born 1876.
