Monica,

Shy? Well my big brother has been called shy but then I was just a little
Shirer, uggh, excuse the bad joke. Seriously though. If you are looking for one
ship with all those names with that spelling you will never find it. But on the
other hand, if you are willing to be a little loose with some spellings then
you might find one ship that has some promise.

In my Shirer research, the name I look for on ships is either Scheurer or
Scherer. My research to that effect has documented most of the ships associated
with those names. One family that arrived in 1730 aboard the Thistle had two
brothers, Johannes Scherrer and Johan Augustus Scherrer and an uncle, Ulrich
Scherer. This family settled in Lancaster Co., PA but Augustus moved to
Frederick Co., MD. The family today is known mostly as Scherer and Shearer.

others of interest to you on the Thistle were:
Jacob Ammon
Thomas Hamman (close to Amman)
Nickell Fiser (could be a derivative of Pheaster)
and some others that could be close if you take some creative license.

Another ship, the Ann in 1740 has some of those names but not all. Not all
sources are one hundred percent correct and the author of the book you
mentioned might be have been looking at some very bad transcriptions or could
just be wrong. It wouldn't be the first time I have seen authors cite sources
that are based on incomplete or inaccurate facts.

If I were you, I would find the book Pennsylvania German Pioneers or
Pennsylvania Foreign Oaths of Allegiance and sit down and map out each of the
names you give and what ships the names are associated with. Using a
spreadsheet approach you can graphically tell what ships get the most hits and
concentrate on it. Expect widely different spellings of the names. There are
other books that like the two mentioned, compile the records of the
Pennsylvania Archives into an easy to use list of ships but the above are
probably the best known and most reliable.

Both are available free right now at Ancestry.com until the 21st but looking at
the indexes in the books themselves can make it easier to figure out alternate
spellings.
