Hi Mary!
For what it's worth, I just checked the 1850 Ohio census index (CD) that I just
got from Ancestry.com. Found no Heys in LIcking county. There were several in
Hamilton County, but no Newtons. Only Alber, Frederick (a death record),
Jacob, John P., Margaret, Sophia A. (death record), William and William H.
(death record). John P. was in Van Wert County. These were all the Heys listed
in Ohio. No Newtons with a name even close to Hey. Since I have just received
this CD today, I can't evaluate it as yet, but it is supposed to be the entire
AIS index for that year for Ohio. HOwever, if Newton was born in 1830 and his
father died in 1840, he could have been "farmed out" to another family. You
might check the Ohio Department of Vital statistics, since you think you know
the death date. <http://www.odh.state.oh.us/>
Check out their site.
The Oho Historical Society also has death records, but after 1908.

There is a tombstone transcription project for Licking County at:
<http://www.rootsweb.com/~cemetery/ohio/licking.htm>
The Licking County HIstorical Society has publications listed on:
<http://newark.lib.oh.us/pub_lcgs_web/lcgspub.htm>
The 1840, 1850, and 1860 censuses are online at
<http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/oh/licking/census/>
No index. You have to search the old-fashioned way or find an index at
ancestry.com or Family Tree Maker.
And, since the courthouse burned in 1875, before your Newton died, his death
might might be recorded in the Probate Court records.
I'm a great believer in census data. Have you checked the Illinois census
and worked back? And double-check that information that pointed to Licking
County.
Happy hunting! - Leah in Texas
