Nancy;
I really appreciate the historical information you post to this list. I
was born and lived 44 of my first 45 years there. Since 81 I have more or
less lost contact with the area. Your posts jog my memory of the good
years I spent there and some of the history I had no knowledge of. These
type of posts by you and others is the main reason I remain on this list.
Keep them coming.

In honor of Black History month am posting this obit taken
from the ELYRIA DEMOCRAT Thursday, November 30, 1893
..............................Death of S.J.
Howard................................
"Samuel J. Howard, the well known colored barber of Elyria, died at his
home on East Avenue, Saturday, about midnight, from heart failure. he
was busy as usual at his shop on West Broad St. during that evening and
as far as known, in the enjoyment of his
accustomed good health. The hour of closing at 10 o'clock came & he
started for his home but on reaching the corner of the Andwur Block, he
felt faint & ordered a carriage to take him there. From that hour, he
grew rapidly worse & expired about midnight.
The deceased was born in Maryland, sixty-eight years ago & when a lad of
14, with three others, ran away from their masters homes & came north.
For a time he was a student at Oberlin & afterwards followed barbering,
locating where he could find work. A portion of his early life was spent
in Shelby. He came to Elyria in 1851 & located in the basement of the
Beebe House, but after a year or more, moved to his late business place,
where he pursued his vocation for forty years & attended to the wants of
the large patronage. A careful record of his business was kept & he
frequently mentioned interesting incidents, connected therewith.
Mr. Waterman was his 1st customer & Mr. J.W. Hannan, his oldest patron.
He was married twice, his 2nd wife survives him. A man of industrious
habits, he made a comfortable living & owned his home on East Ave. The
funeral services were conducted by Rev. E.E. Williams, at his late
residence on Tuesday afternoon at half past 2 o'clock."
Note: Mr. Howard is buried in the Ridgelawn Cemetery beside his two
wives who were sisters.
Next week will post the very interesting obit of his 2nd wife and
surprising info from her will.
