Sharing material on our ancestors makes common sense because
everyone gains. That being said we should share what we have
researched (IN CONTRAST TO MATERIAL WE HAVE COLLECTED FROM OTHER
PEOPLE'S GEDCOMS OR WEBPAGES) and ALWAYS provide the sources of our
information so that others can more easily check on our mistakes.
Yes, we all make them.
Some of us have more research skills and more money to do spend on
resources. I have no trouble sharing the information I have
researched. I have enjoyed this hobby and find sharing as enjoyable
as the initial searching. None of us would have anything if people
had not kept records, family Bibles, old letters and diaries over
the years. We frequently complain when we cannot find information
or that we have to pay for records, but still it is amazing that as
much information from 100 to 300 years ago or more still exists. My
family has some diaries written by a ggg grandfather. He has many
descendants -- my family is so lucky to have this information and I
feel obligated to share it with other interested family.
There are several places to collectively share with the internet
genealogical community where a profit is not made -- you might
consider GenServ (www.GenServ.com) or the free portion of Ancestry
(www.Ancestry.com) where anyone can use the submitted material for
free. One can also contribute to the collective database at
Rootsweb. I personally have not submitted my information to the
commercial Family Tree Maker world pedigree cd project, but others
have donated their material to this source. I personally prefer to
share via media that do not charge for what I contribute.
