While trying to find info on one of my DELLEFIELDs I talked with an older man,
he told of "societies" here that helped Germans come to the USA during the
1800-1900s
I know the situation overseas during the 1840s was called the hungry 40's
over there, conditions over seas were desperate....................
I found this on another line and thought I would pass it on. I would love to
find out more about such societies here - he pointed to the Solvak Club as a
similar type of arrangement so it appeared that there were other ethnic
"societies"
The Sons of Hermann was a group of Germans that banded
together to help fellow Germans that arrived in the
USA to fit into society. I know that there were
groups in NYC and in Texas. My G-G-Grandfather
travelled from NYC to Texas on business for the
group. I have tried to find out more of the history
of the group and have reached a dead end. There are
still Sons of Hermann Lodges in Texas. Now they admit
anyone of any ancestry. They also work as an
insurance group. If anyone else has more "history" on
them I would love to hear of it.
