Waggoner's History of the City of Toledo and Lucas County, Ohio, c1888, on
page 735 under Places for Entertainment mentions the following:
Union Hall, built 1850 by Thomas Dunlap, south side of Summit St. near Oak
Duell Block, also 1850 Summit St. (north side) between Jefferson and Monroe
Stickney Hall, built 1855 by Dunlap, 242-244 Summit
White Hall, 1861 built by A. M. White, 217-221 Summit
Wheeler's Opera House, north east corner of Monroe and St. Clair, built by
Lyman Wheeler in 1873
Two other Toledo histories mention only the Wheeler Opera House. Toledo,,
Gateway to the Great Lakes on page 126 says it burned in 1893 in a
spectacular St. Patrick's Day fire.
Toledo Profile gives an 1872 date for the building and opening of Wheeler's.
This is a little late to be mid century, but it was the most famous and only
one called an opera house that I can find in a quick look at the best Toledo
histories I have.
