"Suicide of J. W. Webber - Sad End of a Well Known Young Business
Man - Sent a Bullet crashing through his temple, his own home the scene"
Joseph W. Webber, a well-known young business man of the city,
killed himself with a revolver shot at 11 o'clock this morning.
The scene of the tragedy was at the family home of Webber, Bo.
2400 Cherry Street, he fired two shots at his head, one missed the mark, and
the bullet buried itself in the wall of the sitting room. The other ball
penetrated the brain by way of the temple, and his death was instantaneous.
Shortly before the fatal act was committed, Webber was reading in
the family sitting room. He talked a few minutes with his wife, who then
went out on an errand. As soon as she was out of sight, Webber took a 32
caliber Young America revolver from his pocket and turned the barrel towards
his temple.
Webber leaves a wife and one child. The latter is 10 months old.
He has been in poor health for some time and his mental condition was
somewhat unsound. About three years ago Webber disappeared and was gone for
some time. At other times, he has wandered away for a few days at a time.
Before going into the carpet-cleaning business on Lagrange Street several
years ago, Webber was employed as a salesman at various down-town dry goods
stores.
Coroner Henzler viewed the remains soon after the affair took
place this morning and remended a verdict of death by suicide. The body was
taken over to a Cherry Street undertaker. The funeral arrangements have not
been completed.
