Ernest A. Malohn
Ernest A. Malohn, 86, of Hefner St., died Tuesday in Riverside Hospital. He was a Marine Corps Veteran of WW II. During his first 26 years of service with the Toledo Fire Dept., he served in many positions including Toledo's first rescue squad unit for 15 years. He retired from active service in 1962.
As a Red Cross firts aid instructor for 38 years, Ernie provided first aid training to hundreds of fellow firefighters, policemen, scouts, and first aid volunteers throughout the community. He also served as the Red Cross Assistant Safety Director for 11 years. Ernie also had been a Riverside volunteer for 50 years and was the recipient of the Heart of Riverside Award in 1976. He received the Outstanding Citizen of the Year Award from the University of Toledo for his humanitarian efforts for the city in 1982.
In 1983 Ernie was honored with the Jefferson Award from WTVG-TV13. He was a member of Salem Lutheran Church and a recent inductee to the Birmingham Hall of Fame. Surviving is his wife, Bertha (Birdie); daughters, Jane Schindler, Phoenix, AZ; Joann Shultz, Hudson, MI and Barbara Mattoni, Toledo; 10 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
Services will be conducted Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in the Eggleston-Meinert Funeral Home, Coy Rd., where visitation will be from 2-9 on Friday. Last Alarm Services will be Friday at 7 p.m. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. The family requests contributions to the Ernest Malohn Memorial Fund at Riverside Hospital or the charity of the donors choice.
